Match the number to the purpose
An ITIN identifies an eligible individual for federal tax purposes. An EIN is used for business and other entity tax identification. They are different identifiers, rather than two names for the same number.
A founder can encounter both during a business journey. The right starting question is: whose information does this form request—the individual’s or the business’s? Look at the instructions for that specific form before entering a number.
An EIN application does not always require an ITIN
Do not assume you must purchase an ITIN service before requesting an EIN. IRS procedures allow certain foreign responsible parties without an SSN or ITIN to obtain an EIN. The appropriate route and entries must be checked for the applicant; online eligibility is a separate question.
Prepare the exact company name, formation information, actual business location, activity, and responsible party details. If a previous EIN may already exist, raise that before a new application is started.
Company formation is a separate step
Registering an LLC, obtaining a business tax identifier, meeting an owner’s personal tax obligations, and applying for banking are separate tasks. Ask a service provider to show which tasks are included in the proposal and which require another engagement.
For example, a founder preparing a business application may first need help organising company records and EIN documentation. If that founder also has a personal U.S. tax filing requirement, an ITIN assessment may be a separate discussion. The business application itself does not settle the person’s ITIN eligibility.
Questions to bring to a consultation
Start with the form or request that prompted your question. You can describe it in your first enquiry and arrange a secure way to provide relevant documents afterward. Clear context helps avoid paying for an unnecessary application.
- Who is requesting the number, and for what purpose?
- Does the request concern me personally or my company?
- Has the individual or business already been assigned a number?
- What service work, official steps, and follow-up are included in the quote?
